Mid-Atlantic States could run out of power.
The states that make up the PJM Electrical Interconnection are at risk for outages and increased energy costs as base load generation plants are retiring faster than new generation is coming on line, according to an article in UtilityDive.com;
Clean energy, gas generation in PJM may take longer to come online than expected: report
“The report comes amid warnings from PJM that it may not be able to bring generating resources online quickly enough to replace retiring power plants. And despite recent interconnection reforms at PJM and by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, more changes may be needed, according to the report’s authors.” The report from PJM (link above) is a very worthwhile read if you are located in PJM.
Even the dismal math cited above, understates the situation. We are not replacing retiring base load plants fast enough to stay even, but our electricity demand is growing and more frequent and longer lasting heatwaves, are additional burdens on the grid.
