New York: You’ve got to be kidding.
As a Concierge Utility, Exergy Energy works for its customers to ensure their power security and power quality; so, we keep up with all the grid developments around the country. Today I was reviewing the New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) long-term assessment of future transmission and generation investment needs.
NYISO releases long-term assessment of energy demands, transmission needs
I was not surprised by the forecasted increase in demand by 50 to 90 percent over the next 20 years, or that it will require between 100 and 130 gigawatts of additional generation. The requirement is that 20 GW of that needs to be dispatchable emission-free resources (DEFR) by 2040.
The joke is the following statement (emphasis added): “The outlook highlights that future DEFR technologies could include long-duration batteries, small modular nuclear reactors, hydrogen-powered generators, and fuel cells. At present, no DEFR technology is available at a commercial scale.”
Heck of a plan when 20% of it is a hole. Failing to plan is planning to fail. Get real.
