Yesterday I posted; “Energy Wake-up Call” the challenges of the energy transition. The conclusion was simple and straightforward. The problem is so big and we are going about it in such a haphazard manner, that things are going to break and you need to take individual action today.
While the implications of the energy transition challenge are quite devastating, I failed to expand beyond the grid issues. This morning, I received the following from the energycentral.com and EPRI:
Better Understanding Compound Climate Hazards is Essential for Power System Resilience
The article describes the compound problems such as a hurricane takes out the grid and it will take several days to repair but at the same time a brutal heat wave occurs, putting people’s lives at risk.
Quoting from the article: “The Fifth National Climate Assessment finds broad agreement that compound events are a growing threat to society and critical systems. Numerous researchers have examined trends and projected changes in individual climate hazards and evaluated the potential impacts of these hazards on the power system. However, the impacts of compound hazards have received less attention and are fundamentally much harder to assess.”
The bottom line is that the energy transition will be even more painful and expensive. It is important to take action now.
