Change the time of electricity intensive processes
The carbon intensity of the grid can change dramatically during the day. The actual generation mix and carbon intensity per KWh for your location is available online from your utility. In general, the carbon intensity of the grid is lower during late morning through late afternoon, when solar production is highest. Carbon intensity ramps considerably throughout the evening until wind production picks up later at night. As wind generation increases and load declines, the carbon intensity of the grid declines significantly until early morning at which time carbon intensity increases rapidly as wind generation falls off, solar has yet to contribute and load is increasing. To reduce your plant’s electrical load carbon footprint, schedule your most intensive loads, such as induction and resistance heaters, during this high renewable generation periods of the day.
